Dr. Bucklew has for the last three years been committed to two major community service projects as a volunteer.
One is to provide physician services to the homeless living in "Tent City," services sponsored by AHAC (Alternative Health Access Campaign). Tirelessly, he spends every Sunday afternoon providing diagnosis, counseling and treatment to the men and women who temporarily or permanently call "Tent City" home. The tents are moved from one church parking lot to another about every two months, and Dr. Bucklew treats the patients at their location. He is sometimes referred to as "The Back Doctor," as many of the residents benefit from having him adjust their backs. Since many of the residents are recovering addicts and alcoholics, Dr. Bucklew has also developed significant skills in helping them along the long road of recovery.
The second project is to observe and assist with acute and emergency care in the emergency room every Thursday evening at Ballard Hospital, literally next door to Dr. Bucklew's clinic. Here, he is challenged to be a nurse, an assistant, a mentor, a counselor and an alternative medicine advisor all in one shift. Dr. Bucklew thrives on the energy in a busy emergency room and is always eager to observe and learn about trauma diagnosis and treatment. He is even more excited when he can educate the doctors in the emergency room about including natural therapies in their treatment of the patient. Slowly but surely, some of these therapies are gaining acceptance in the traditional medical setting, and Dr. Bucklew is proud to be part of that movement.
